Race Report from Kris Jarocki:

Marshall Nordic Tops the Pincushion
A beautiful day in Grand Marais was the setting today for a challenging race for the Marshall Nordic team at Pincushion. Temps in the mid-twenties, several inches of fluffy new snow and a broken trail groomer conspired to test our intrepid racers. Cloud cover kept the race time temps from topping the freezing mark, thereby preventing the course from turning to mush. Heavy snowfall made for an interesting start, with the skiers resorting to sunglasses to try to part the snowflakes for a view of their course. Senior Lee Weintraub logged a top ten finish in her last regular season Classic Pursuit. The team now turns its attention to the Section races next Thursday at Giants Ridge, always an exciting event. Hopes are high for a return of Marshall to the State meet. One race at a time, gang!

Marshall Holiday Ski Camp 2010!

Posted by Dave Johnson on December 29th 2010 in Events

The Marshall Holiday Ski Camp closed today with the traditional Topper Tunnel celebrating the accomplishments of the seventy participants of this year’s camp.  The 8th Annual Marshall Holiday Ski Camp was held at Snowflake Nordic Ski Center from Monday, December 27, 2010 until today, Wednesday, December 29, 2010.  The camp is the fund raiser for the Marshall Nordic Ski Team.  This years proceeds were used to buy benches and waxing equipment for the new wax room.  The weather was perfect for this year’s camp with temperatures in the upper 20’s and over a foot of snow on the ground.   Here is what one parent had to say about this year’s camp:

“Thank you for putting together this wonderful ski camp. This was Johann’s second year in ski camp ….. he loved it and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The young instructors are fantastic and enthusiastic which I believe enhances the kids’ experience and willingness to learn. Also, I have to say that the ladies who put the snack buffet are great! The choices are great and healthy!”
The members of Marshall Nordic wish to thank everyone who helped make the camp possible and thank the participants for their great spirits and willingness to learn new skills.

Megan’s Grand Adventure in West Yellowstone

Posted by Dave Johnson on November 24th 2010 in Events, Team Communication

MeganMegan C. is with the CXC Team in West Yellowstone over the Thanksgiving holidays. She is sending back daily email updates. Here is what Megan has to say!

Tuesday, November 23, 2010
Today we did a 5 minute run and then 20 minutes of strength, all outside. Ate breakfast and I worked on homework. We then went on a hour and a half skate ski and did technique work such as no pole skiing, working on getting on our edges, V2 and v1. After that we went on an easy 45 minute ski in the blizzard; it was really cool! After lunch we watched ourselves ski from that morning. One of the coaches was filming us, and the main coach, igor, was slowing it down and rewinding, telling everybody what to change and how to do it. It was very helpful, and by watching myself ski, I could really see what I was doing wrong. At 4 we went on an easy 30 minute run then ate dinner. There was a ski expo at one of the hotels with all of the ski Brands there such as Toko, Swix, Salomon, Fischer, ect. They had a bunch of new things like boots, skis and waxes that everybody could look at. Finally, we came back to the hotel and we are about to head to bed!

Monday, November 22, 2010
This morning at 7 we did a 5 minute run outside then strength exercises with an expert. We had breakfast and a break then at 9 applied kick wax. We headed out to the trails and did a 30 minute warm up, then different drills without poles, one pole, double pole technique and just skiing, all on a small hill. We then did a 45 minute ski/cool down. It’s really nasty and blowy so we got the choice to take the afternoon off. I did, and started some homework and waxed skies for tomorrow. I think we are going to go to Harry Potter tonight! Then bed!

Sunday, November 21, 2010
This is Megan. I missed the early morning workout, but my friend said they did a 30 minute run. The mid-morning workout was skate technique on the trails for about an hour and a half, maybe a little more. We went very easy, however the altitude makes it much harder! We had a long break and ate lunch, then did 2 hours of bushwhacking around a river and it was so much fun! A very easy pace, but I was definitely winded! West Yellowstone has about 3 feet if snow and the conditions are great! It’s really very beautiful but a bit cold.

Marshall Nordic Skiers Go the Distance

Posted by Dave Johnson on March 10th 2010 in Events, Team Communication

Korkki Nordic Ski Center is to many folks the perfect nordic ski center.
The single track classic trail winding through the woods seems to transport skiers back to another place and time.  Adding to the ambiance is the rustic chalet, well stocked woodsheds, and other small buildings that evoke a feeling of coming home.  For many members of the Marshall Nordic Ski Team, Korkki Nordic has also come to symbolize a place to challenge yourself. The trails can be difficult and they demand your best skiing to navigate them safely.  There is another challenge that speaks to the skiers.

This challenge is represented by two small plaques in the chalet, the Errki Harju 100 k Club and the Korkki Nordic 50 Kilometer Club.  To have your name added to either plaque a skier needs to ski 5 or 10 full loops of the Korkki trail, including the big hill (aka..Iso Maki).  To accomplish this in a day is a difficult task in even the best conditions.  Until Thursday, March 4th only 18 skier’s names graced the 100 Kilometer Plaque.

That list of names grew to 21 after three Marshall Nordic skiers completed 100 kilometers of skiing around 6:00 pm on Thursday March 4th 2010.  Starting at 5:15 am using headlamps to guide their way, Sam Johnson, Joe Fairbanks and Cody Johnson began skiing on the expertly groomed trails.  Their first goal Read the rest of this entry »
