2012 Cook County Invitational Pursuit Race

Date: Friday, February 3, 2012.

Note: Event will be broadcast live (with streaming video!) on WTIP

Where: Pincushion Mtn Ski Area On the Gunflint Trail.
(Co. Rd. 12 is the Gunflint Trail – go through “downtown” Grand Marais, turn left onto the Gunflint Trail, go about three miles to the Pincushion scenic overlook (Pincushion Drive) and turn right.

Warming house and primitive toilets on site.

Bus Leaves Marshall @ 6:30 am

Coaches meeting & bib pickup 9:30 AM at Pincushion warming house.

ORDER OF START (Enter as many skiers as you want)

10:30 am start running clock. Racers double start at 30 second intervals.

NOTE: The Jr. High race is for classical technique only and shall be for up through the 9th grade. Varsity skiers can ski both races (pursuit), or just either one, but varsity awards shall be given only for the pursuit. The classic varsity pursuit skiers will begin in the order of their freestyle finish at the interval they finished behind the leader. Individual classic only skiers will follow behind pursuit skiers. Note, however, that skiers entering only one race will not count for the team score. Only pursuit skiers will count towards team scores,

FOOD! THERE WILL BE HOMEMADE SOUPS, BREAD, BARS AND DRINKS AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE, SO LEAVE THE PB&J SANDWICHES AT HOME!
AWARDS:

Individual top 10 in pursuit: Medals. Individual Jr. High classic: Medals 1-5,Ribbons 6-10
Team plaques 1-2-3.
Award presentations will be at Pincushion warming house immediately following race.
The Grand Marais Municipal Pool (with whirlpool & sauna) will be open from noon to 8PM. A book of 10 tickets can be purchased there…Make a day of it!

8th Annual Marshall Sprints

Due to lack of snow in Duluth, The 8th Annual Marshall Sprints will be held at Hidden Valley Ski trail in Ely, MN on Saturday, January 21, 2012. The Marshall Sprints features an unique format to guarantee all varsity skiers at least two races for a total just over 4 kilometers of racing. The course is safe, fast and exciting. Link to Sprint Course Map It will be a true test of your skier’s talent. We will have a separate Jr. High 3.3 kilometer mass start freestyle race.

Time: 9:00 bib pick up and course inspection

11:00 Sprint Qualifier

Followed by:

Boys Mass Start Jr. High 3.3k (Awards to top 10, Coaches time their own skiers)

Girls Mass Start Jr. High 3.3k (Awards to top 10, Coaches time their own skiers)

3.3k Girls Consolation Race (Awards to top 10)

3.3k Boys Consolation Race (Awards to top 10)

Single elimination sprint heats top 16 boys and 16 girls (Awards to top 8 of each gender)

Format:
All skiers (except Jr. High) will ski a 1 kilometer qualifying sprint race on the sprint course. The top 16 girls and top 16 boys will qualify for the single elimination sprint heats. All other skiers qualify for the 3.3 kilometer Consolation Race. Fastest overall times will determine final 3.3 kilometer short course race placement.

Entry Fee: $6 per skier. Checks made out to Ely Nordic Wolves Checks can be mailed to: Gail Gustafson, 2350 Birchwood Lane Ely, MN 55731, or pay at bib pick up.

Awards to the top 10 boys and girls 3.3 kilometer race and Jr. High 3.3k race. Awards to the top 8 skiers in the single elimination sprint heats. Top 3 boys and top 3 girls in Sprints will receive a Billboard Bag Ski Bag.

CEC Invitational January 10, 2012

The CEC Invitational will be held at Spirit Mt on Tuesday, Jan. 10th. This will be a skate race starting at 1pm. I won’t have the course finalized until Friday but it will be multi-laps over sections of the downhill and bunny hills adjacent to the Chalet much like the course used in the Denfield race. I have been assured that the course will be safe even if Spirit needs to close a run. For those familiar with Spirit, the course will include the bunny hill and the practice hill around the trees.The target is to have ~5k for varsity and JV and ~2.5k for JH.

Race bib pick-up will open at 12pm with a coach’s meeting at 12:30pm. Bib pick-up will be in the main Chalet nearest the south end. Coach’s meeting will be held on the main chalet deck. Fees will be $5 per skier payable to CEC Nordic.

Spirit Mt. has several places to buy food so that should not be a problem. Buses will need to park in the parking lots so teams should plan to use the Chalet. There is plenty of room. Please get your entries to Steve (Boreal Timing) by Sunday PM.

Course description

Parts are the same-ie the bunny hill behind the Chalet but we will cross over to the woody island on the other side of the first down hill run-and then climb up and come back on a downhill traverse across this same run. Think kidney bean shape. It will be run clock wise as oppose to counter clockwise the way we mostly have been skiing it to take out a choke point at high speed. Top speeds should be somewhat lower than Denfield’s course and all high speed turns have been angled out. Over all technically easier but with more angled climbs as we will be traversing the slope. Being able to switch poling sides will be a good thing.

Essay Contest Winners!

After our first race of the season, The Ely Invite at Mt Itasca, we announced an essay/writing contest. The skiers were asked to write on the theme of “What did I learn at my first race of the season?” With out further adieu here is our winner followed by our runner up. Both skiers will receive a ski related prize and a green smoothie from Mr. KJ.

What did I learn at the Ely Invitational meet that will help me be better prepared for the next meet?

As I stepped off of the bus last night, I was a very happy person. I had just raced the best ski race of my life, and I had plenty of reasons to explain that.

During the spring and summer of 2011, I had dedicated myself to training. I made a promise to myself that I would get myself into racing-shape. I always keep my promises. I went running after school every day following the end of ski season, as soon as I got home from school. I looked up training plans online to help me get an idea for what it was I wanted to achieve. The short-term goal I had in mind for myself was the Garry Bjourkland half-marathon, so my first training plan was an intermediate half marathon training plan. I made a habit of writing down every workout that I did. My training log starts on March 1, 2011, and is continuous until today. I quickly discovered that in creating new habits, like running or working out every day, that is was much more enjoyable to work out and run. In June 2011, I ran the half marathon, finishing in 2 hours and 6 minutes. I cut 48 minutes from my time from 2010, and what’s more, I never stopped running the entire race. I didn’t stop or take any breaks at all. I was so proud of myself, because I knew that I had worked for it. I didn’t “get” into shape; I earned into shape.

Schedule:

Bus leaves Marshall School at 7:30 AM and Returns at 6:00 pm

Marshall Nordic Begins the 2011-2012 Season!

Attention all Marshall students grades 7-12, you are invited to join the Marshall Nordic Ski team! Our preseason meeting will be held Wednesday, November 2 at 3:15 in the afternoon in Mr. DJ’s room. Practice begins on Monday, November 14 at 3:20 in the upper school commons. Come dressed to run and workout outdoors. Think hat, gloves, long underwear, wind proof coat and pants and good running shoes.
