Duluth XC Summer Youth Program
2008 Program Coached by André Watt, Anders Osthus, and Nikolai Anikin
The Duluth Cross Country Ski Club (DXC) is excited to announce its 2008 (third annual!) Summer Youth Training Program. An important component of DXC’s educational mission, the summer training program provides a low-cost opportunity for high school athletes to learn about technique, conditioning and other components of Nordic skiing from experienced coaches. The program is funded in part by proceeds from the Banff Mountain Film Festival, which DXC hosts each November (scholarships are available). Summer 2007 participants included skiers from Marshall, East, and Central high schools; we hope to have even more Read the rest of this entry »

Summer Ski Care
First published in SkiPost Reprinted by Permission
The question of the end of the season is always, “How should I care for my skis before I put them away?” This is what SWIX recommends you do for your skis for those few months when they are being ignored.
For classical skis one should use a wax remover and fiberlene to thoroughly clean all kick-wax and klister from the kick zone, sidewalls and tops of the ski.
Next, the glide zones must be cleaned. You clean the glide zone of a classical ski (tips and tails) the same way you clean the whole base of a skate ski. This is done using a soft wax such as Swix CH-10.
With your iron at a low temperature (so as not to over-heat the base) drip a generous amount of Read the rest of this entry »

Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. Despite being physically tired and mentally drained after a long racing season it is now when I start to get excited for next season. During these low key weeks of running, biking, relaxing, and working, I generally just do whatever my body feels like it wants to do each day and sometimes that 1 hour workout turns into a 4 hour tour. So I don’t want to rain on anyone’s party, but May 1st is here just like it is every year. This is the traditional start of the training year and we want to be ready, not just for the first week of training, but with our plan for the coming year.
I worked with Ahvo Taipale throughout my entire ski career and we had a Plan, Execute, Analyze approach to things. We are at the end of this sequence and now is the time to Read the rest of this entry »

Just another month of school and then a great three months of summer! What are you going to do to stay in great shape for the sports that you love? Here are two excellent possibilities for skiers in the Duluth area:
Summer Youth Program Registration Open
Registration is open for DXC’s third annual Summer Youth Training Program (June 9—August 1). Coached by André Watt, Anders Osthus, and Nikolai Anikin, the eight-week program offers morning or afternoon sessions of ski-specific activities (roller skiing, strength, ski-walking, etc.). It’s a fun way to build and maintain fitness, learn from experienced coaches, and get to know athletes from other schools. Subsidized by proceeds from the Banff Mt. Film Festival, the program costs only $75 for the summer.
Duluth Rowing Club
Pre-season registration is now open for the Duluth Rowing Club. The DRC provides instruction, coaching and daily training for Jr. High, Senior High and Adult folks interested in an exciting and fun sport. The open house for the Duluth Rowing Club will be on Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 10am to 12 noon.
Followed by:
Junior Parent Meeting
Saturday May 17 @ 12:00pm
We will be meeting with all Junior Rower Parents after the Open House.

Grooming ski trails and setting up race courses is one of my favorite activities. I am always on the lookout for ways to improve the job that I can do or for equipment that will make the job easier. When I first saw a picture of the ASV Scout SC-50 I was intrigued. From the picture it looked to be just the perfect vehicle to fill the gap between a snowmobile and a large Pisten Bully type of vehicle. I made some inquires with the ASV folks and was put in touch with Hannah Tanata at ASV. She invited me to tour the factory and share with her my thoughts about the Scout as a grooming vehicle. Hannah also offered the use of a Scout to support Marshall hosting a Super Tour Sprint Race.
ASV delivered the Scout SC-50 early in January 2008 and we had use of it on the Marshall Campus until the middle of March. The model that ASV delivered had an enclosed cab, dump box and plow.
What did we use the Scout for and how did it perform?
