Snowflake Chalet Hill

Snowflake Nordic Ski Center was alive today with the sounds of happy children enjoying just another Extra Blue December day at the Marshall Holiday Ski Camp. Today was the second of three days of camp. The focus today was on fun, technique and covering distance. The advanced skating group went out on the 10k early in the day. I met them just past Wiggles and I was impressed with the speed at which the class was moving. Marty and his crew really had them speeding along. The younger groups stayed a bit closer to the chalet, playing tag, one ski soccer and a hide and seek game called Thicket. The older intermediate groups found fresh snow out on the biathlon range and spent a fair amount of time just playing in the snow.

That really is the idea behind the camp, to help children discover the joy of playing in the snow on skis. Skiing at its core is just folks sliding on snow. We can try and make it more serious by a hyper focus on “doing it right” or going overboard on competition, still when you break it down to the essential element skiing is just an excuse to slide on snow.
And what fun it was today! After 35 years of skiing I have many images of great ski days in my brain. One of the top images, will be the scene at the end of camp today. Over 120 skiers, parents and students skiing, sledding, running and sliding up and down the hill behind the Snowflake Chalet. It was an insurance agents nightmare, yet a child’s dream come true. Maybe in this world we need a few more places like the Snowflake Chalet Hill. Maybe if we spent more time sliding together we would find less time for disagreements and conflict.
