My First Race! Now What?
Posted by Dave Johnson on December 6th 2007 in Team Communication, Races, EventsSaturday you will board the bus at 7:00 am to travel up the state to participate in your first cross country ski race of the season. If this is your first race you might have so many questions about what to do that you might not even know where to start. If you are more experienced, you might need a refresher to help you be prepared for a day of racing. Here are the top six items to think about to have a great first race of the season.
1. Rest! Get plenty of sleep between now and the race. Now is not the time to stay up late checking email. Get to bed early and sleep well.
2. Food! Eat well and healthy at each meal. Eat a good breakfast before boarding the bus and bring with a snack for the bus ride. A lunch for after your race and a snack for the bus ride home. A rule of thumb is to not eat within 2-3 hours before your race.
3. Equipment! Make sure you have all needed equipment. Pack your ski bag the night before and double check that you have everything that you need.
4. Clothing! A skier needs three sets of clothing for a meet. You need the proper clothing to ski a warm up and cool down in. You need proper clothing and footwear for standing by the side of the trail and cheering on your team mates and you need complete set of dry clothes to change into after your race. Think of layers and think of an extra set of dry long underwear.
5. Race! Listen carefully to your coach and watch the more experienced skiers. We will help you understand the flow of the day from bib pickup, to warm up, to race, to cool down and then to the awards ceremony.
6.Relax! and know that you are going to have a great time!
