Hi Liz:

You did read the invite correctly, varsity is skiing a 1 Kilometer Sprint race and the JR High and JV are skiing a 3 kilometer mass start race. This does seem backwards. Here is the reason why. The Varsity athletes will all ski a 1 kilometer course to try and be in the top 24 finishers. If they are successful they will then move into an elimination round, where they will race head to head against 3-5 other skiers. In that round the top two skiers advance to the next round. This continues until only 4 skiers remain and they race for 1st through 4th place. It is a very exciting event. At the end the top skiers will have skied 4-5 kilometers all at top speed. Thanks for asking the question and you gave me a great idea on what my next post should be about!

Am I reading this correctly--the varsity are skiing 1 k and the JH & JV are skiing 3 k? This doesn't make sense to me. If this is correct, please explain so that I can gain a better understanding of this sport.
