Sprint Course Workday Report

dsc00374.JPGOn Saturday, November 17 several members of Marshall Nordic gathered to work on the soccer field access ramp. In the winter this ramp will be an important component of the Marshall Sprint Course. The philosophy on construction of the trail system at Marshall School has been to recover and use areas of the campus that had been neglected or under utilized. The hillside where the ramp is now located fit this definition to a T, it was a tansy covered, rocky slope. Through the kind donation of equipment and operators from Lakehead Construction the ramp was built from fill dirt and the existing slope. With winter snows fast approaching the administrators turned to the talented members of Marshall Nordic for help with covering the fill dirt with top soil, seeding, mulching and general clean-up.

dsc00372.JPGSaturday started off with a light dusting of snow on the ground and a temperature of 20 degrees. Not your normal climate for landscaping! Undeterred, the members of Marshall Nordic began spreading out top soil, raking and seeding. A huge factor in the volume of work accomplished was the expertise of Neil Igo on the skid steer loader. Neil’s son Scott graduated last year, but Neil still enjoys a challenge involving mechanical or electrical equipment. Over the course of two days Neil was responsible for literally moving a mountain of top soil. The complete photo set can be found at this link on flickr. Thanks to Neil and all the members and parents of Marshall Nordic for a great day of work. May you enjoy the glide down the ramp knowing that you played a huge roll in its creation!
